So where did I come up with the idea for this blog? Well, since I do many different tasks at Rose-Hulman, I do not specialize in any one particular thing. Sure, I am very strong in some areas and could use some work in others, but I would not be considered an authority in any particular area in the library profession. Frustrating at times? Yes. Unsatisfying? Not at all! In fact, I take great pride in having competencies in so many areas. It gives me perspectives on serving academic library users that many “specialist” in larger universities don’t have because they don’t necessarily see the big picture. I have sometimes tried to specialize in certain areas, only to be pulled away often to (as I put it) do this, that, and the other thing. So instead of getting frustrated by that, I have chosen to embrace it and fancy myself as a multitasking, sometimes frazzled, jack of many trades librarian. At Rose-Hulman, everything we do is for the students, and thus at Logan Library our mission and daily activity is service oriented. So my intention is to blog about this type of librarianship, but if I go long stretches without blogging, that just means I am busy doing this, that, and the other thing (AKA my job).
